Frequently Asked Questions

About the Setting

In the 26th Century, faster-than-light travel across space is a fact of life. People travel in starships powered by vortex drives. 4 major powers are competing for dominance over the Milky Way Galaxy, and thousands of alien species live, work, and play together on the inhabited planets of the galaxy.

At the turn of the 26th Century, war has broken out. 100 years of peace administered by an Organisation for Interstellar Peace has been shattered.

Humans, united under the banner of the Terran Democratic Republic are one of the 4 major vying for power, supported by their allies the Rosebourgs. Their major competitors are the Gohorn Directorate, a militaristic power that has suffered from the century of peace, and the Luna Minoris Confederacy of Non-Aligned Worlds which is a slowly-integrating alliance of hundreds medium-sized and minor powers that were forced to come together to be able to weigh in in the Organisation for Interstellar Peace.

Humans have overcome a lot since the 21st century, but our very survival as a species is now at stake.
  • Major planets often have diverse alien populations, people are used to seeing aliens,
  • Most use hover technology to get around on planets,
  • Public and private transport are readily available,
  • Many species also still use land-based crafts for both civilian and military purposes,
  • An OIP mandate harmonised traffic rules and signage across the known galaxy,
  • News travels quickly between planets,
  • Space traffic between planets can be quite intense (especially on major planets),
  • Some societies resort to intense manipulation of weather on their planets.
  • Most people will have travelled on a star ship and their nearby planets,
  • Starships have limited range (max 3 months); they need fresh produce resupplied,
  • Shuttles, transport pods, and other crafts necessary as there are no transporters,
  • Artificial gravity and atmosphere aboard starships is a given,
  • Ion power cores provide ships a stable power source,
  • Ships have redundant emergency battery cells,
  • Most starships are owned by civilians, or corporations,
  • Piracy is a real threat for civilians (but a police or military ship is often nearby),
  • Ships' polarised armour can sustain light hits from laser guns, torpedoes and missiles,
  • When a hull is breached, emergency bulkheads drop to protect the surviving sections,
  • Ships have no shields asides from force fields used to push away small space debris.

  • Ships use vortex drives and vortex space to achieve faster-than-light travel,
  • Fighters, shuttles, support crafts too small to enter vortex on their own power,
  • By entering vortex space, the distance between two points shrink,
  • Ships in vortex are undetectable in normal space,
  • Ships in vortex cannot scan normal space,
  • Ships maintain a vortex bubble for max 24hrs before having to return to normal space,
  • A ship must recharge outside of vortex for many hours before returning to vortex,
  • Each faction has a different way of entering vortex,
  • Rosebourgs have the fastest vortex-capable ships,
  • The manipulation of vortex is extremely dangerous, accidents are catastrophic,
  • Vortex storms:
    • Are random events,
    • Severely damage ships by destabilising vortex bubbles,
    • Thrown ships violently back to normal space,
    • Are barely detectable.
  • Few of the major factions view telepathic abilities neutrally, most are prejudiced,
  • Each of the factions have stereotypes that often permeates in the local language,
  • Every planet still has pockets of people prejudiced against aliens,
  • Prejudices towards hybrids can differ greatly in intensity between the major factions.
  • Also known as the OIP, it is the UN of the 26th Century,
  • Founded in 2407, it will secure peace for nearly a century for the galaxy,
  • Established by the Architects, a gorilla-like race reputed for their mediation skills,
  • Major factions participated until 2501, Rosebourgs and Confederacy remain members,
  • Rosebourg influence over OIP has waned since war has started,
  • Governs using OIP binding and non-binding resolutions, and non-binding mandates,
  • Established a wrath of accepted interstellar standards (i.e. the rights of sentient life),
  • Successfully established neutral star ports, each becoming major trade centres,
  • Had a peacekeeping force (PeaceForce) using the resources of the major powers,
  • Also contributed significantly to scientific advances of the 25th Century.
  • Known as Hyperdate,
  • Used by everyone in the known galaxy,
  • Established as a necessary part of the HCOM (Hyper-Communication) system,
  • Represented as 5YY.DD.MM,
  • Example: If today is 22nd August 2513, corresponding Hyperdate is 513.22.08
  • Also known as métis in the New Worlds setting,
  • Hybrids result from the mating of two compatible species,
  • Pregnancies of hybrid children often require specialised medical care,
  • Pregnancies result in higher infant mortality and miscarriage rates than average,
  • Each hybrid birth is a case-by-case, as genetic makeup can differ greatly,
  • Most hybrids are accepted within society,
  • Some can face prejudice, depending on the faction and the parenting couple.
  • Compatibility and standards set the OIP's Interstellar Communications Agency,
  • Local communication (up to within a planet) managed via ICOM (InternalCOMM),
  • Interplanetary and interstellar communication managed via HCOM (HyperCOMM),
  • Communication signals can either be text, audio, audio-visual, or even holographic,
  • Within a star system, HCOM is real-time and instantaneous,
  • Distance between two HCOM signals can lead to connection delays of a month max,
  • Generally, within a major faction’s territory is delayed by up to a week max,
  • Communication across factions' space may take an additional 1 or 2 weeks depending.

  • Two energy sources provide energy – fusion and ion. These are readily available,
  • Large stationary fusion reactors are used to power cities, planets, space stations.,
  • Fusion power cores provide energy to hovering crafts,
  • Ion power cores provide energy to most military crafts, civilian and military starships,
  • Battery cells provide energy to mobile devices and can last years before running out.
  • Flexible paper able to display electronic data readily available,
  • Eye lenses able to provide digital and sensory information readily available,
  • Personal communication devices readily available and in many formats,
  • Universal language translators readily available and in many formats,
  • Interstellar Personal Access Networks are the 26th Century's Internet,
  • Personal Access Networks are:
    • Built on Multi Language, Network-Adaptive, User Network coding language,
    • Allow all factions' computer systems to be compatible.
  • Different types of workstation are commonly used,
    • Hard-point: Permanent, single location, requires physical contact,
    • Holographic: Permanent, single location, holographic image that follows gestures,
    • Mobile: Provide access to data and limited control features,
  • 20 companies control the lion share of the music, film, and literature industries

Music
  • Music remains hugely popular in the Known Galaxy, genres have difficulty jumping across species,
  • Very few super stars have managed to secure a following across all of the species of the Galaxy,
  • Genres to jump across species tend to be geared towards young peoples:
    • Nueva Techno (evolved version of human dance music, fused with Rosebourg beats),
    • Anacadan Trees (popular amongst the LMC species, uses sounds from nature.)
  • New field Exo-Medicine established with exo-physicians, exo-surgeons, etc.,
  • Interspecies medicine advanced through OIP exchanges of scientists,
  • Mobile biological scanning technologies readily available,
  • Only largest starships and stations have medical facilities equivalent to hospitals,
  • Baseline interspecies drugs exist to combat viral, bacterial infections, and injuries,
  • Access to quality medical care is generally guaranteed in the Known Galaxy,
  • Syringes replaced with devices that apply drugs sub-dermally,
  • Viral and bacterial infections that jump species discovered regularly and tough to treat.
  • Each major faction has a different economic model,
  • People “earn” a living; gap between rich and poor has usually shrunk tremendously,
  • An OIP-managed currency exchange programme sets exchange rates,
  • The LMC Credit is the standard of the Known Galaxy due to the OIP’s adoption of it,

  • Planets outclass starships – air, ground superiority needed to capture a planet,
  • Drop ships, fighter crafts launched from high orbit necessary,
  • Even small colonies have defences counting hundreds of long-range missiles,
  • Star ship lasers cannot hit the ground due to atmospheric dispersion.
  • Missiles and torpedoes can punch through atmospheres and hit ground targets,
  • Planet weaponry generally outrange star ship equivalents,
  • Missiles outrange torpedoes but are much more costly to produce and use,
  • Most space facilities require significant firepower to be outclassed and be taken down,
