in What We Do

Championing the exploitation of PbP

We support individuals creating and sustaining PbP activities. Play-by-post creative writing games are part of a maturing virtual society that is rediscovering the value of art and culture. These play-by-post games are offering new opportunities for aspiring writers to practice their craft in a supportive environment. The use of the Internet offers an opportunity for these writers to engage in collaborative writing anywhere in the world. These activities are made possible by the goodwill of individuals who give their heart and soul for their communities. At New Worlds Project we realise how rewarding these activities are not only for the community leaders but also for the benefactors. We also understand how difficult it is for individuals to combine all the skills required in just one individual. Individuals need to be supported if these virtual society efforts that create opportunities for cultural expression are to continue to develop. That’s why New Worlds Project is devoted to working within its community to build capacity, share best practices, and support those ready to take on the challenge.

Working to empower the PbP community…

Ever since we launched New Worlds Project RPG, New Worlds Project’s volunteer staff members have been working with other community leaders in the play-by-post community. In our exchanges with community leaders from all over the world, employing the PbP in different genres, we acquired a unique understanding of the strength and weaknesses of our community. The community’s strength is its ability to bring together writers from all across the world. Its strength is its ability to have writers participate in creative writing activities and making these communities so welcoming that all contributions are welcome. The community’s weakness lies in its ability to encourage new individuals to join in these activities and the ability of community leaders to effectively manage their initiatives over time.

New Worlds Project believes in PbP communities – it believes that such communities can become powerful agents of a ‘digital civil society.’ Our communities encourage participation amongst different participants; they encourage intercultural dialogue. For community leaders, these communities instil in them an entrepreneurial spirit and builds up their polyvalence in continual exercises. Maintaining a PbP activity is a painstaking effort, but it is both a rewarding and enriching experience for leaders and benefactors.

Helping initiatives survive the test of time…

At New Worlds Project, we work to empower the PbP community and improve initiatives’ abilities to survive the test of time. As the first PbP community to become incorporated as a non-profit, New Worlds Project takes its role of ambassador for the community seriously. In all our activities, we seek to engage with new partners and new individuals raising awareness of the community’s existence and value to an ever broader public. In doing so, we are working to tackle the problem of finding enough individuals to participate in PbP activities head-on.

We are working to support community efforts with logistic support. We are active as moderators and contributors within community initiatives seeking to bring community leaders together. In this regards, we share our experiences through articles and tutorials which can be of immense help for new community leaders. We are also active participants in debates involving the community helping to forge a common understanding of the potential for PbP. Together we find ways to help improve information exchange amongst community leaders.

Being ambitious for the sake of our community…

New Worlds Project hopes to organise a capacity-building project that will hopefully lead to the hiring of full-time employees to work on tackling the weaknesses of the PbP community. We intend to provide online trainings, project support grants, and an annual prize contest. These efforts will allow us to offer more community leaders the opportunity to initiate their own activities and to sustain them better by providing worthwhile training and advice on the themes that community leaders identify as needing the most help with.
